Job statement: Developing image reconstruction algorithms for positron emission tomography and prompt gamma detectors for range verification. Developing the software framework for In-Beam imaging system.
Background: Proton therapy is a highly targeted dose delivering technique for cancer treatment. Uncertainties in the treatment planning, CT image conversion and patient positioning can lead to a mismatch between the planned and delivered dose. Secondary particle detection comprising prompt gamma and positron annihilation gamma photons enables proton range verification. Photon activity profiles generated from reconstructed images can be compared for simulated and measured values to obtain the range errors. Detector development for in-beam imaging in proton therapy is challenging due to several reasons - high count rate, background noise, lack of compact and efficient gamma detectors in the 1-10 MeV energy scale, and tight constraints on the acquisition time and detector placement. There is scope for novel detector design and image reconstruction based on a multi-channel time-of-flight approach with a final goal of real time range verification.
Expected Trainings:
⁃ PET image reconstruction and implementation on GPU.
⁃ Development of reconstruction algorithms for collimator and collimator-less detectors in prompt gamma.
⁃ Geant4/GATE Monte Carlo simulations
⁃ CUDA programming
⁃ Developing deep learning-based methods for image reconstruction on GPUs.
